Asam Sahitya Sabha Demands To Include Assamese in School Syllabus As 3rd Language
Guwahati: The Asam Sahitya Sabha (ASS) today demanded the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Kendriya Vidyalayas’ to make Assamese subject compulsory up to Class XII.
Addressing a press conference here in Guwahati, ASS President Paramananda Rajbongshi said that it is necessary to speak English and Hindi but at the same time, the children also needs to learn their mother language which needs to be given due seriousness. “The ASS has made a tour to inspect the scenario of teaching in CBSE schools where we have come to know that almost all the CBSE schools do not teach Assamese or other regional languages spoken in Assamese barring few. Whereas, the children who are studying in these schools belong to the state of Assam and most of their mother tongue is the language of different communities to which they belong,” Rajbongshi said.
Asam Sahitya Sabha strongly urges upon the CBSE to direct schools located in Assam to implement Assamese and other languages of the communities in your schools at least up to 12th standard. The Sabha is willing to support this cause and continue further discussion with the higher authorities if needs arises.
Rajbongshi further said that the Sabha has been playing vital role in strengthening bond of friendship, brotherhood and communal harmony among the people of Assam and the North-East.
The ASS demanded that people who don’t have knowledge in their mother language will not be provided with any jobs. Therefore, the Sabha asks the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and CBSE board to include Assamese and other regional languages till Class 12 as a compulsory subject as the third language.
According to the census report in 2011, at present, the Assamese speaking population in Assam is just 48.01%.
The apex literary body also announced that they will felicitate the students who have secured more than 80% marks in Assamese and other regional languages.
