Cancellation of Citizenship Bill, an introduction of Inner Line Permit & dual citizenship

GUWAHATI: As safety and security of the indigenous people of Assam is under threat, the AJYCP (Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad) is in its agitation mode – ready to roll for a fresh bout of agitation from this Republic Day.

Addressing the media in Guwahati on Monday, AJYCP general secretary Palash Changmai said: “Our agitation is in support of the demand for immediate cancellation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 (earlier 2016), the introduction of Inner-Line Permit (ILP) and dual citizenship in the State.

Awareness among the people is a must. From this Republic Day we’re going to take out padayatras (marches) to bring about awareness among the masses on the conspiracy hatched by the BJP Government to kill democracy and the Constitution of India. On January 30 we’re going to stage a protest demonstration all over the State. It will be followed by a rail roko agitation on February 7. Trains will be blocked at various areas in the State on that day. Our agitation is to continue.”

Changmai said: “The organizations which have been agitating demanding cancellation of the Citizenship Bill have no reason to talk to the government for any solution. Since there’s no solution other than cancellation of the anti-Assam Bill, such talks are not going to serve any purpose. The final safeguard for the indigenous people of Assam is ILP. To make that really happen, we’re going to start a serial agitation.”

The AJYCP general secretary further said: “Keeping mum for a long time on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, at last, sided with the Bill. We condemn such an act that has rendered him ‘trust unworthy’.”

Appealing to the AGP, Changmai said: “The regional party should take the lead so that all the Opposition parties go into a huddle and move a motion in the State Assembly against the Citizenship Bill.”
