Assam Additiol CS to visit East Jaintia Hills

SHILLONG, April 17: Assam Additiol Chief Secretary Shyam Lal Mewara will visit East Jaintia Hills district for enquiring into the death of 14 labourers at Umpung, Saipung area. It may be mentioned that Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi asked Mewara to inquire into the circumstances leading to the labourers’ death. The Assam additiol chief secretary will be reaching the Circuit House, Deinchynrum, East Jaintia Hills District on April 20. Meanwhile, the East Jaintia Hills district administration has directed members of the public, including the medical officers conducting the post mortem, police officers of Saipung police station, headmen and secretaries of Thuruk village and those having connection to the incident to attend the hearing. It may be mentioned that on April 6, 14 labourers hailing from Assam’s Dhubri district died in their camp after allegedly consuming poisonous wild fruits. All the deceased were working at a road construction site at Umphung village, which is about 15 km away from Saipung in the district.
