Assam among few States announcing so many rank holders

GUWAHATI, April 10:  Assam is among a few States in India having the tradition of announcing so many rank holders in HSLC and HS examitions, a development according to experts responsible for creating unhealthy competition among private institutions and students.

The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) is now contemplating to do away with its tradition of announcing rank holders in the HS examitions. But many of the States in the country have already removed such system. While Tamil du last year decided not to announce the mes of three ranks holders in the Class XII fil exams arguing that such announcement commercialized the education system, few other Sothern States had removed the system both in Class X and XII fil examitions some years back on the same ground.

Assam is now among a few States including NE States having continued the system of announcing rank holders in HSLC (Class X fil) and HS (Class XII fil) examitions. Even the neighboring States like West Bengal and Tripura have given a serious thought on removing the system of rank holders in exams. Interestingly, Assam announces mes of 20 and 10 rank holders in HSLC and HS exams respectively while many States does not announce more than 5 rank holders.

Even though chairman AHSEC Dayanda Buragohain formally placed the idea of removing the tradition of announcing rank holders in the HS fil exams before the AHSEC’s general council meeting held on March 29, the general council was of the opinion that public opinions must be generated first before taking any fil decision on the issue. The AHSEC’s move will, however, face hurdles with influential organizations like All Assam Students’ Union is in favor of retaining the rank system as it results in academic excellence among students. 

But noted academicians and experts have voiced against the ranking system   and said many private institutions put unnecessary pressure on their students to secure ranks, considering the future of their institutes. If students secure ranks they immediately get media attention and these institutes start promoting themselves to attract more students. There are many such institutes where overall results of students are not very impressive and they receive attention only because of one or two rank holders.
