GUWAHATI: Assam boxer Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) bowed out from the Asian Boxing Championships losing her quarter-final tie to Chen Nien-Chin of Chinese Taiper in Bangkok today. Chen won the bout 5-0.

It was the revenge match for Lovlina as she lost to the same opponent during the semi final in world Boxing Championship last year. However, Chen proved too good for her and never allowed Lovlina to make a comeback into the contest.

However another boxer from Assam Shiva Thapa (60kg), a three-time Asian Championships medallist, has kept alive his medal hope. The boxer will fight his quarter final tie tomorrow and a victory will be enough for him to ensure his fourth medal in the Championship.

Meanwhile Amit Panghal (52kg) knocked out the reigning Olympic gold medallist Hasanboy Dusmatov while Kavinder Singh Bisht (56kg) stunned 2017 world champion Kairat Yeraliyev as India confirmed four medals at the championship today.

The fast-rising Sonia Chahal of Haryana, aged only 21, showed a lot of maturity and calm nerves in her enthralling 3-2 win over Korea’s Jo Son Hwa.

Makran Cup gold medallist and national champion Deepak (49kg) did not even have to enter the ring as he was given a walkover by Afghanistan’s Ramish Rahmani due to injury. The semi-final berth awarded Deepak his first Asian Championships medal.

Meanwhile like Lovlina two more Indian boxers Seema Poonia (81kg) and Rohit Tokas (64kg) also bowed out from the competition today.
