Assam Chess Prodigy Shahil Dey shines at 32nd National Under 11 Chess Championship 2018

GUWAHATI: Assam Chess Prodigy Shahil Dey yet again proved his talent by finishing joint first in the 32nd National Under 11 Chess Championship 2018 that concluded at Keraikudi, Tamilnadu today. Shahil who was seeded second in the tournament scored 9 points along with Dev Shah of Maharashtra, Mahendra Teja Mekala of Andhra Pradesh and A. R ILLamparthi of Tamilnadu.

However, based on tie-break Shahil was placed Third in the tournament and top seed Dev Shah clinched the championship. Shahil needed a win going into the last round against top seed Dev Shah. However, despite his best effort, he could only manage a draw which was not enough to secure the championship.

Shahil had earlier won the National Under 7 chess title in the year 2014 & National Under 9 Chess title in the year 2016. Shahil had also managed to secure a silver medal at the Asian Under 8 Chess Championship 2015 at South Korea.

Altogether 243 players participated in the Open category and 159 players participated in the Girls section. With this performance Shahil has booked his place in the Indian team for the Asian and World Under 12 chess championship 2019.

Another Assam Boy Mayank Chakraborty also performed well in the tournament and secured the 14th position in the Open category. Ashlesha Talukdar of Assam also put up a good performance and secured 17th position in the Girls category.
