Silchar: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s message for the people of Barak Valley on the pious occasion of Bhasha Shahid Divas which falls on May 19 is winning hearts. Representatives of Bhasha Shahid Smarak Samiti invited him to attend the series of colourful events today which is conducted to commemorate the sacrifices made by 11 martyrs on the same day in the year 1961. It is pertinent to mention here that since 1961 no Chief Minister of Assam has sent such an inspiring and encouraging message. He wrote that former union minister and veteran BJP leader Kabindra Purkayastha invited him to come here, but he could not arrive due to some unavoidable circumstances.

The Chief Minister mentioned that preservation of culture and language is indeed important. He wished the series of events a grand success and also paid rich tributes to those 11 martyrs. This information regarding the receipt of such an inspiring letter from the Chief Minister was shared at a press-meet held here today. The members, Biplop Kumar Goswami, Swarnali Choudhury, Shantanu Nandan Bhattacharjee, Dr Arun Bhattacharjee, Kishore Bhattacharjee and Amrit Kumar Acharjee, expressed their gratefulness towards the Chief Minister for this kind gesture. They, however, put forth the long felt demands of recognition of 11 martyrs, declaration of May 19 as state holiday and provision of compensation to the bereaved families of the martyrs.
