Assam Destination For Human Traffickers!

GUWAHATI: Northeast India continues to be the destination for human traffickers in the country. From 2011 to June 2017, as many as 1,185 people have trafficked from Assam alone, and 722 of them were rescued from different places elsewhere in the country.

As many as 895 cases were registered during the period under human trafficking (section 370 and 370A IPC). Besides rescuing 722 of the victims, the cases led to the arrest of 659 traffickers.

Wherever may lie human traffickers’ destinations in the region, the transit point is Guwahati – thanks to the importance of its location. Most of the traffickers take victims by trains.

What leads to such a situation? According to sources, life is really terrible in some areas in Assam and other States in the region. People are rendered jobless and homeless, especially in Assam because of floods, violence, poverty and whatnot. The vulnerable districts in the State, according to the sources, are – Kokrajhar, Udalguri, Sonitpur, Morigaon, Karbi Anglong, etc – where violence, floods and poverty take heavy tolls.

Such people of either sex are lured with promises of jobs in metropolitan cities even as the traffickers have something different in their minds. The major destinations where people trafficked from Assam and other States in the region are Mumbai, Haryana, Siliguri etc.

Adding to the grim situation are lack of any legal system in sync with security personnel and easy money being minted in the unholy trade. While some of the victims are used as domestic helps, some are even pushed to the world of flesh trade.

Assam has anti-human trafficking units to fight such a menace. There are NGOs and women cells to check the problem in the field. However, the menace is far from being rooted out.
