Assam Panchayat Polls: BJP announces list for 2nd phase

GUWAHATI: The State BJP on Saturday has announced its list of candidates of 169 Zila Parishad Constituencies (ZPCs) for the second phase of the panchayat polls. Notably, there are as many as 87 women candidates while 54 ZPC candidates were from minorities out of the total 169.

Alongside the official announcement of the list, while talking to the reporters at its party headquarter located at Hengrabari, State BJP spokesperson Jayanta Kumar Das criticized various ethnic organizations and individuals who have been rigorously opposing the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The spokesperson did not even sphere to criticize its own party MLA Atul Bora. He alleged that certain organizations and intellectuals of the State have been indulging in spreading false message in accordance with the Citizenship Bill. Criticizing the All Assam Minority Students’ Union’s opposition to the Citizenship Bill, Das argued, “How come the AAMSU has become an ethnic organization when there were evidences of their opposition even to the Assam Movement?”
