Assam Panchayat Polls: Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner issues order to deposit  fire arms

LAKHIMPUR: With a view to the likelihood of political violence during the electioneering period of Panchayat elections, Deputy Commissioner cum District Magistrate of Lakhimpur, Dr. Jeevan B has prohibited carrying and keeping possession of fire arms till the electioneering works are over.

He has enforced this prohibition through passing an order by exercising the power conferred upon him under section 144 CrPC in order to ensure free and fair election, for the maintenance of law and order and to inspire the confidence on the impartiality of the machinery. Through the same order, he directed all the fire arm holders of Lakhimpur to deposit their fire weapons at the police station of their respective jurisdiction within November 23 and to obtain proper receipt from police authority. Failing of this order is liable to be prosecuted under section 188 of IPC. The impounded fire arms will be returned by the OCs concerned within a week after the declaration of the result. The SP of the district imposed responsibility to instruct the OCs of all police stations accordingly in this regard.
