Assam Rifles Jawan (Constable) allegedly shot himself to death in Biswanath

Biswanath: Sensation triggered at Assam Rifles camp at Balipukhuri area in Biswanath after a jawan (constable) allegedly shot himself to death with his own service rifle on the first day of the new year at around 6 pm in the evening on Tuesday.

As per police report, other fellow jawans hearing the sound of the gunfire rushed to the spot but found him lying unconscious.

The deceased Assam Rifles jawan identified as Gopal Singh died on the spot, claimed the fellow Assam Rifles jawans before the police today.

Speaking to the media, Biswanath Police Station, officer-in-charge, Anju Goswami said, “We came to know about the incident in the morning hours today. As per preliminary investigations, it was confirmed by his fellow jawans that constable Gopal Singh had allegedly shot himself on his neck with a self-service rifle. But we are yet to ascertain whether it is an accidental case or suicide.”

Police also hinted before the media, that they are suspecting it to be a case of suicide.

Meanwhile, the body had been sent for post-mortem. “We can confirm the matter with details after the post-mortem report,” added OC Goswami.
