Assam Rifles Move Is State-Sponsored Oppression: NESO

SHILLONG: The North East Students’ Organization (NESO) on Friday wondered whether the move of the Central Government to give sweeping powers to the Assam Rifles personnel to arrest anyone and search a place without warrant in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland and Mizoram is in any way connected to the inability to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. The NESO in a statement issued on Friday asked whether the move was to preempt any people’s movement as happened recently.

“…or to put in place the Assam Rifles personnel to oppress any people’s movement in the near future if the BJP brings back the CAB after the Lok Sabha elections,” NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa said in his statement.

Jyrwa said that the act of the Government of India can be termed as “state-sponsored oppression” which further proves of the attitude that the BJP-led Central Government has towards the indigenous people of the Northeast.

The NESO chairman also said it seems the Government of India is never satisfied to subject the indigenous people of the region to untold misery and suffering through the AFSPA.

“This unprovoked move by the government can be termed as downright tyranny on the indigenous people of the Northeast and NESO calls upon all the indigenous people to be united, alert and to rise to the occasion in the event of any eventuality,” Jyrwa said.
