Assam Shivers As Constant Rain Brings Down Mercury

GUWAHATI: If it is cold, it will only get colder. The cyclone named as Pethai that reportedly hit the Bay of Bengal on Monday night resulted in heavy rains with mild wind across Assam on Tuesday which was quite unusual during this part of the year.

With rains likely to continue for the next two or three days the Celsius will dip further with weathermen seeing no adverse conditions to block the bone-numbing chill. Guwahatians, particularly, have been caught unawares by the severity and sudden sharp dip in temperature.

“The minimum temperature in Guwahati on Tuesday is 16 degree Celsius and maximum is 19.01 degree Celsius. The mercury across Assam has also come down at an alarming rate. The light rains will continue for another 3 days as per weather forecast and the sky will remain cloudy,” an official at Regional Meteorological Centre at Borjhar told The Sentinel.

The people are evidently feeling the chill. “I will skipping my morning walk in the next few days as it has become colder,” said Sangeeta Saikia of Pan Bazar here who is a regular at Dighalipukhuri Park, one of the favourite haunt of morning-walkers in the city.

In the streets of Guwahati, people were seen huddled around small fires as the minimum temperature dipped to 16 degrees Celsius suddenly on Tuesday. Pavement dwellers were seen warming themselves around small bonfires in several parts of the city.

“The weather in my district, though always cold, has been unbearable on Tuesday due to constant rain and wind,” said Amjad Ali, a college teacher in Dhubri.
