Assam State Zoo Cum Botanical Garden Introduces New Animals

GUWAHATI: It is a wondrous sight when a variety of species can be viewed in a zoo. Even native wild animals are hard to witness in their natural habitat; as such zoos are a treat for most. Animal not native to the area are an even bigger treat. To widen the experience, the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden has brought in 32 new animals and birds through an exchange programme with the Kanpur Zoo.

This exchange programme will help in the introduction of new animals that many might not have the fortune of viewing anywhere else. The new inmates at the zoo include two ostrich chicks, two emus, eight crocodiles and 20 cockatiels. In exchange, the Guwahati Zoo gave away two pelicans, two four-horned antelopes (chousingha) and four sangai deers to the Kanpur Zoo.

The animals were brought in by train on March 19 and will be released for public viewing soon. According to zoo officials, the birds will be kept in quarantine, while the crocodiles will soon be released for the visitors to admire. The new addition is hoped to boost the flow of visitors.
