Association demands probe into Luna Kalita suicide case

GUWAHATI, June 9: The ‘Assam Association of the Deaf’ on Saturday demanded high level probe into the Luna Kalita suicide case and sought capital punishment to the culprit allegedly involved with the incident. Talking to the media persons, general secretary of the Association, Tapan Sharma said that they will stage a protest rally on June 11 next seeking justice to the tragic incident of the differently abled. On June 7, hearing-impaired Luna Kalita who worked as cook at the Indian Institute of Research and Development for Differently Abled (IIRDDA), Jalukbari hanged herself to death at the hostel premise. She hailed from Goreswar area of Baksa district. Allegedly, the Managing Director of IIRDDA Dr Ramani Barman sexually abused the deceased which led to the abetment of the suicide. Presently, the accused barman has been arrested and booked under IPC 302.
