Attempts By Khasi NGO to Grab Assam Land Foiled

Silchar: There have been attempts in the past also to forcibly grab the land of Assam by some miscreants of Meghalaya. In the present instance, the inmates of a Karbi village of Malidahar, 100 km from here, were surprised to see a sign board hung by a Meghalaya based NGO HANM near their hamlet which read ‘Welcome to Meghalaya’. The site of the sign board was 500 metres inside the Assam land from the Malidahar bridge point, the dividing line between the two states.

The wordings on the sign board in Khasi language meant ‘Welcome, Rilang to Kuplang Khasi land’. Rilang indicated the point from the Malidahar bridge to Kuplang near the Karbi village, a landmass of 500 metres. In terms of encroachment, it has wider implication. It also came to light from the spot visit that the NGO HANM’s land protection cell has been behind all the mischief. It was only after three days of encroachment that the Gumrah police down Katigorah revenue circle on being informed rushed to the spot with armed policemen. The sign board was pulled down and the demarcating pillars put up by the Meghalaya miscreants were removed.

A local inhabitant of the Karbi village Rajen Teran said over telephone from the spot of the incident, “It is not for the first time that the miscreants backed by local administration of Meghalaya have made attempts to grab Assam land. In the past also, the situation triggered by forcible occupation of Assam land prompted the district administration of Cachar and East Khasi Hills administration to sit for settlement.” According to him, though the sign board was put up on December 14, the villagers could notice it next morning as they move out of their homes in the wee hours for jobs and works and return late at night.

As if Assam land is on auction because attempts are also made by Mizo miscreants to grab Assam land, bordering Cachar and Hailakandi. Some of the hot spots of encroachment are in the Gharmura areas of the southernmost part of Hailakandi district. In Cachar, the areas where Mizos set their design of aggression are up Lyallapur close to Vairengte, the entry point to Mizoram. All this problem arises due to the hilly terrain and in most cases, the demarcation is difficult to define. But, the administrative jurisdiction and the revenue circle or areas under the control of Cachar and Hailakandi districts are well defined. There can be no cause of dispute or controversy. Banamali Khasia of Baikam Khasia punji near Assam-Meghalaya border has been witness to many such unfortunate skirmishes in the past.
