Auto driver abducted from Cachar found dead in Karimganj

An auto-rickshaw driver was found dead in a forest in Karimganj district on Wednesday night. He was reportedly abducted from Panibhora locality of Cachar district on August 2.

According to a statement by a senior police officer Rupam Paul (38), who is by profession, an auto driver had on August 2 left for Samarikona in Hailakandi with three passengers before informed his wife Suma. The wife in a statement said, “This was his last call. The next day, some unknown persons telephoned me saying that my husband had been abducted and he would be released in exchange for hefty ransom.”

Family members had already filed an FIR with Dholai police station.

After the body was recovered locals assembled a blockade on NH 306 which connects Silchar and Aizwal at Panibhora from 9 am to 5 pm on Thursday as a protest against the murder of the abducted auto driver.

When the situation in the blockade went out of control DIG (southern Assam range) Devraj Upadhay and SP (Cachar) Rakesh Raushan rushed to the blockade and helped bring the situation under control on Thursday.

SP (Cachar) Rakesh Raushan said that till now six persons have been arrested till now in connection with the abduction and subsequent murder of Rupam Paul. The police keep a close vigil and on the lookout in order to nab two other persons who were suspected to involve in this crime. The SP informed DIG (southern Assam range) Devraj Upadhay ordered the suspension of the Dolai Police station OC Bhaskar Jyoti Das on Thursday. Local people were angry with police stations and demanded immediate justice for the deceased Paul.
