SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) and the National People’s Party (NPP) will work together to form the Executive Committees (ECs) in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC). “But who will play a bigger role we will know only after the elections,” UDP vice-president Allantry Dkhar said.

Meanwhile, UDP working president, Bindo M Lanong said the UDP and the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) are already in a pre-poll alliance and it prefers to work together with regional parties.

Other regional parties in the fray in the Autonomous District Council (ADC) polls are the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) and the People’s Democratic Front (PDF).

Lanong also said the UDP wants to form an EC without the Congress or the BJP.

On the issue of common candidate for the Lok Sabha election which will be held later this year, the UDP said if the regional parties want to defeat the Congress and the BJP there is a need to have a “positive mind” and a “spirit of give and take”.

“If all of us fight against each other it will be difficult (to win),” Lanong said.

When asked about the recent statement made by NPP national president that the party was intending to field candidates in almost all the Lok Sabha seats in the North-east, the UDP working president stated that the UDP will discuss the issue.

It may be pointed out that former MLA, Jemino Mawthoh, was declared as the common Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) candidate of the UDP for the Shillong seat.
