Avoid Conflict on Citizenship Bill: AGP to CM Sarbananda Sonowal

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Sept 11: A delegation of the AGP Legislature Party (AGPLP) on Tuesday met Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and expressed strong opposition to the decision of the recent BJP national executive to support the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

The delegation comprising three ministers – Atul Bora, Keshab Mahanta, Phani Bhusan Choudhury and a few other MLAs – told Sonowal that since the AGP has been vehemently opposing the Bill it will be advisable for the BJP to avoid a conflict with the former by not supporting the proposed legislation. The AGP legislatures also discussed a few development issues with the Chief Minister and said some party MLAs have grievances over inadequate development schemes for their respective constituencies.

Sonowal and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was also present in the meeting, responded positively to the constituency development issue. The delegation assured CM that they would try to run the ensuing Assembly session smoothly.
