Awareness drive by Hailakandi district administration to contain jaundice in Hailakandi

Hailakandi: To spread awareness on jaundice, the Hailakandi district administration has swung into action. With the cases of jaundice on the rise, the administration has initiated a slew of steps to make people aware of the disease and to adopt preventive steps to contain it. Jaundice cases have been high in Hailakandi municipal areas and not much in the periphery with few cases reported, health authorities here disclosed.

Several persons afflicted with jaundice have been treated in SK Roy Civil Hospital. Following reports of leakage in pipes and contamination of water in some wards of the municipal areas, Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli directed the Public Health Engineering engineers to overhaul the piped water distribution network by fixing up the problem at the earliest.

Meanwhile, the PHE engineers have got down to work to rectify the problem at several points where leakage has been reported. Report is awaited for the water sample collected from some affected households sent to Silchar for examination to find out if there is any trace of bacteria in water. To generate awareness, leaflets highlighting on the dos and don’ts have been distributed by the ward commissioners in the 16 wards and also in other parts of the district.

A rally was organised on Saturday by the District Water Sanitation Committee, PHE, Hailakandi Division for building awareness on prevention of jaundice and participated by the Hailakandi Municipal Board, Merchant Association, Nagarik Suraksha Mancha, Senior Citizen Forum, Urran and Health Service. Besides rally, regular announcements are also being made through fixed loud speakers and advertisements issued in vernacular newspapers from time to time to create awareness and to prevent the disease from spreading further.
