Awareness meeting against witch-hunting held

From a Correspondent

Doomdooma, Nov 16: An awareness meeting against witch-hunting was held at Samguri line of Khobong Tea Estate under Talap Police Station, about 13 km away from here recently under the presidentship of Ranjit Kurmi, secretary, Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA), Talap Branch. Simmering tension prevailed here in a witch-hunting incident few days back. According to reports received here, recently four tea-tribes women of that labour line alleged two women of the same line of practising witchcraft.  The fellow tea workers propitiated the four women to keep them under control and brought them to the nearby Talap Kali Temple cleverly to save the situation.

On receipt of information, Talap Police sent the four women to Doomdooma Police Station (PS) and kept the two women in Talap PS itself for their safety. The meeting which was organized under the aegis of Khobong TE authority and with active co-operation of ATTSA and Chah Jajati Jatiya Mahasabha (CJJM), was attended by officer-in- charge, Talap PS, Thagis Doley, Welfare Officer, Khobong TE Ratul Chaudhary, Anuj Tirki of CJJM, and gaon bura Niren Minj. They explained to the workers that in this age of science and technology, these incidents were mere examples of superstition.
