STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, July 27: Commemorating this year’s ‘World Hepatitis Day’, the Apollo Hospitals Guwahati organized an awareness program in its premise on July 27 with an objective to create awareness about hepatitis among the people.

Addressing the media persons alongside the programme, Dr Kamal Chetri and Dr Mukesh Agarwal of the hospital, highlighted on the causes and symptoms of hepatitis and various measures to be taken which can provide a normal healthy life for hepatitis patients.

Enlightening the gathering, the duo said that some types of hepatitis will pass without causing permanent damage to the liver. However, chronic cases can cause cirrhosis, liver failure or cancer. There are five main hepatitis viruses, referred to as types A, B, C, D and E, which pose the greatest risk. Hepatitis B (HBV) and C(HCV) are viral infections which can cause chronic hepatitis and are the leading causes for hepatitis cirrhosis and cancer, thus creating a significant burden to healthcare systems due to the high morbidity and mortality and costs of treatment. Notably, around 70-80% of people with Hepatitis B or C do not even have any symptoms. The symptoms often go unnoticed, the reason why this disease is also known as the ‘Silent Killer.’ Moreover, according to the World Health Organizations (WHO), one-third of the world’s population has been infected with HBW, and more than 350 million suffer from chronic infection.
