GUWAHATI, May 8: At a time when Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is talking of a jihad against corruption resentment is brewing in the State Fishery department following a move by the department’s top brass to regularize services of 40 employees through unfair practices.
A meeting of the board of directors of Assam Fisheries Development Corporation Ltd held on March 8, 2017 under the chair of the State fishery minister decided to appoint 40 contractual employees for various posts in the corporation. Contractual employees for the posts of junior engineer, technical assistant, computer operators, field assistants, drivers, fourth grade and beel guard were appointed on the very next day of the board of directors meeting on March 9 and they joined their services on March 10.
Surprisingly on April 12 this year the managing director of Assam Fisheries Development Corporation Ltd wrote to the Additional chief secretary of fishery informing that 59 regular posts are lying vacant in the corporation and such posts could be filled up by 40 contractual employees. The development has generated a great deal resentment and anger among the employees of the Fishery department. They are questioning as to how could the responsible person like managing director of Assam Fisheries Development Corporation Ltd could say that regular posts could be filled up by contractual employees. “We smell a foul in the entire development,” an employee said.
