Ban on illegal sale of molasses demanded

GOLAGHAT, April 22: The local people of Rongamati area of Golaghat district, in association with the Mod Mukti Asom Dabi Samiti, gheraoed Lalchand Agarwalla’s molasses godown on Sunday, demanding ban on illegal sale of molasses and alcohol in Assam. The protesters shouted various slogans against the State government and district administration for allegedly not taking action against illegal molasses sellers. Molasses are used for making local liquor (sulai).  Noted businessman Lalchand Agarwall used to store large quantity of molasses.

More than 400 protesters took part in the protest. Addressing the gathering, the president of Mod Mukta Asom Davi Samittee, Prabin Das said, “The BJP-led Sarbananda Sonowal government is planning to kill youth by making available liquor in village areas. Increase in alcohol consumption will lead to increase in crimes like rape, theft and robbery.” The protesters blocked NH-37. After the Circle Officer of Khumtai Revenue Circle gave assurance of taking proper initiative to stop the illegal sale of molasses, the road blockade was lifted.
