Ban on polythene bags in Sonitpur

Tezpur, May 3: The Sonitpur district administration has imposed a ban on the use of polythene bags and plastic carry bags in the district. The Additional District Magistrate, Kishan Kumar Sarmah on Thursday issued a prohibitory order under Section 144 of the CrPC to ban the use of certain types of plastic and polythene carry bags with immediate effect. As per the order, all carry bags made of virgin or recycled plastic less than 50 microns in thickness have been banned in the district. With the imposition of the ban, no person, including shopkeepers, vendors, wholesalers, retailers, traders and hawkers will sell or store or use any kind of plastic carry bags for storing or dispensing of any eatable or non-eatable goods or materials. Besides, no person will manufacture, import, store, sell or transport any kind of plastic carry bags in the district.

No person will use any kind of plastic food containers, packaging materials and other such materials in and around the tourist spots- Agnigarh, Coal Park, Ganesh Ghat and other tourist places in Sonitpur district. Any violation of the order will be punishable under the provision of Section 15 of the Environment Protection Act, 1986. This order has been enforced in the entire district with immediate effect and will be continued until further order.
