'Ban Triple Talaq immediately'

New Delhi, Nov 2: A women’s organisation on Wednesday demanded an immediate ban on Triple Talaq since “it is not prescribed in the Quran”.

The tiol Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) also said that there was a design to push forward a Hindu agenda and that orthodox elements in all religions were coming together to deny women equal status.

“Triple Talaq in one sitting should be abolished with immediate effect. It is not prescribed in Quran. Anyone pronouncing or supporting it should be treated as instigating domestic violence,” NFIW President Noor Zaheer told the media here.

“A woman should have the right to divorce/khula and say the word ‘talaq’ thrice in the same manner after a gap of one month and 10 days each time in the presence of two adult witnesses like her spouse,” she added.

NFIW Executive Committee member Rushda Siddiqui asked why the issue of Uniform Civil Code was being linked only with the Muslim persol law in a deliberately misleading manner to polarise communities.

“Instead of talking about gender justice and protection of women rights, the Law Commission has floated a public questionire on the Uniform Civil Code. Why is the government trying to merge the two issues?” she asked.

NFIW General Secretary Annie Raja said: “This is nothing but an RSS-BJP design to push forward their Hindutva agenda. All the orthodox and fundamentalist forces of all religions are united in denying women equal status. “At the present juncture, fundamentalists from the Muslim community are hand in glove with their counterparts in the Hindu religion,” Raja said.  (IANS)
