Barring Commerce, Is Guwahati City An Education Hub?

Cotton and other prominent colleges of Guwahati lose their sheen

Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI: As many as 62 students have made it to the 30 positions (ten each) in the merit lists of HS Science, Commerce and Arts examinations, 2019. However, the share of Kamrup (M) among 62 is just 12 – nine from KC Das Commerce College and three from Gauhati Commerce College in Commerce, two from Sai Vikash Junior College in Science and only one from Assam Jatiya Bidyalaya in Arts. Once big names like Cotton College (now Cotton University), B Barooah College, Handique Girls’ College etc have lost their sheen. They have simply failed to face the juggernaut from the private educational institutions that have come up in large numbers.

In Arts, the first position has gone to Khushboo Firdous of Brilliant Academy Jr College, Darrang. Kamrup (M) has to remain contented with just the 10th position held by Gunjan Das of Assam Jatiya Bidyalaya. While Jorhat has five students making it to the ten positions, four students from Darrang have made it to the merit list. In such a dismal situation, can one still claim Guwahati as the educational hub in Assam insofar as Arts is concerned?

The situation for Kamrup (M) is equally dismal in HS Science. Only two students – Saptadweep Saha (6th) and Jibanjyoti Kalita (8) – both from Sai Vikash Jr College could make it to the merit list. The first position has gone jointly to Sayan Mazumdar of Darrang College, Sonitpur and Bitupan Arandhara of Ramanujan Jr College, Nagaon. Nagoan stole the show as nine students from the district could make it to the merit list. Guwahati has lost its sheen in bagging most of the top positions in HS Science.

However, Commerce seems to be the domain of Kamrup (M). Even as the first position has gone to Ashim Sarkar of Vivekananda Jr College in Cachar, KC Das Commerce College of Guwahati has the distinction of six of its students making it to the merit list. Following KC Das Commerce College is yesteryears’ chart leader Gauhati Commerce College that has three students in the merit list this year.
