Bautista tops Cecchinato, qualifies for St Petersburg Open semis

St. Petersburg: Fifth seeded Spanish tennis player Roberto Bautista Agut won Friday's match against Italy's Marco Cecchinato 7-6 (7-0), 6-3 to reach the St. Petersburg Open semi-final.

Bautista Agut, the World No. 26, needed one hour and 26 minutes to get past Cecchinato, world No. 22, the champion of the 2018 Croatia Open and Hungarian Open and a 2018 Roland Garros' semifinalist, in the first face-off between the two players. The Spaniard is awaiting the result of the clash between Dominic Thiem of Austria and Russia's Daniil Medvedev to know who will be his rival in the semifinal match.

In another tie, Slovakian Martin Klizan advanced to the semi-final after defeating Canada's Denis Shapovalov 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. The world No. 65 Klizan took two hours and two minutes to beat seventh seed Shapovalov in their first encounter at one of the ATP World Tour 250 series tournaments, held on indoor hard courts.

This is the first St. Petersberg tournament appearance in six years for the 29-year-old Klizan, after winning the 2012 edition.

The Slovakian Star is set to square off next against either Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia or Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland. IANS
