Bid to make Tirap self-sufficient in fish seed production

Itanagar, June 19: With fish being one of the most prominent and valuable protein sources in human food which is indispensible for good health, a scientific fish breeding operation was carried out at Government fish seed farm, Deomali in order to make Tirap district self-sufficient in fish seed production. The programme was planned and executed by P C Bhattacharyya, district fishery development officer (DFDO) Tirap and H Khoisia, in-charge, Government fish seed farm, Deomali, P Songthing of Krishi Vigyan Kendra Deomali also attended, an official communiqué informed here today. The first round of seed production was conducted on June 1 where around 10 lakh fish spawns of Indian Major Carps (IMC) namely Catla, Rohu, Mrigal were successfully produced in Chinese Eco-Circular Hatchery set up at the farm. The second round of successful induced breeding operation was carried out on June 11 last where around 30 lakh of IMC spawns were produced and the third round of induced breeding was carried out on 16th June last that produced around 30 lakh of spawns. The spawn were nurtured initially in the spawning pool and after 72 hours they were shifted to well-prepared nursery tanks of the farm for rearing. The healthy fish seeds will be available for sale in the Govt fish seed farm, Deomali at nominal rate in near future, the communiqué added.
