Big defeat to people of Assam, 17 constituencies of Assam might go under Bangladeshi Muslims by 2021: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati: At a time when the much debated Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 was lapsed on Wednesday with the Rajya Sabha being adjourned sine die on the last day of the Budget session, State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on the other claimed it to be a big defeat for the people of Assam.

He also mentioned that due to this, at least 17 constituencies in both Middle and Lower Assam might go in the hands of illegal Bangladeshi Muslims.

Minister Himanta also questioned, if that happens then safeguarding the people of the state will be tough, "therefore, both the BJP party and I myself stand in favour of the bill".

He also highlighted the fact that we don't have a majority in the Rajya Sabha, so we will wait for our time. "This bill has to be implemented else entire state will be encroached by the illegal Bangladeshi Muslims by the year 2021," said Himanta Biswa Sarma.

On being asked about the BJP government's next move to pitch for the early passage of the legislation of the bill in the next Lok Sabha session, Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma replied that his party will fight the upcoming Lok Sabha elections with this resolution. "It is the commitment of the BJP party, therefore, we will abide our commitment, there is nothing to hide about it," added Himanta.
