Bijoya Chakravarty claims 98 percent of Muslim NRC applicants producing fake documents

Guwahati: Speaking over the NRC issue in Assam, Guwahati MP Bijoya Chakravarty is of this opinion that the procedure of name enrolment in the NRC is going through a false and illegal system. Pointing at the Muslim population specifically, she said that at least 98 per cent Muslim people living in 17 districts of Assam are taking help of fake and illegal documents to get their names enrolled in the NRC.

Notably, the NRC Assam currently is undergoing the claims and objections submission period and hence, the people who did not find their names in the final draft of the NRC are, submitting their documents at present. Moreover, as the last date of submission of claims and objections has been extended up to December 31 by the Supreme Court of India, there is now some more time for the complainants to submit their documents.

The BJP MP made the statement in Lok Sabha. Chakravarty even made a mention under Rule 377 in Lok Sabha by requesting for immediate implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. Chakravarty said the indigenous people were finding it extremely difficult to get their names included in the NRC as they do not possess any documents. On the other hand, the Muslim and other illegal immigrants are showing documents which are fraudulent.

Chakravarty also added that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 has no chance of being presented in the Parliament during the ongoing Winter Session.

As per rules, one needs to produce documents proving his/her forefather’s existence in Assam. The applicants are required to include the names of those persons (or their descendants) who appear in the NRC, 1951. However, such applicants are being allowed to provide five different kinds of documents to prove their citizenship and eligibility to be enrolled in the NRC.

It was in the year 2013 when the first process of NRC update had started under the strict monitoring of the Supreme Court of India. Finally, on the midnight of 31 December 2017, the first part Draft NRC was released, followed by the release of the final draft on 30 July 2018.
