BJP Emerges Victorious in Lakhimpur, Wins 3 ZPC Seats

LAKHIMPUR: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged as the victorious majority party in Lakhimpur district too as per the result declared on Thursday. The counting of votes continued in the district for the second day amidst tight security.

As per result declared on the second day, BJP and its alliance party Sanmilita Gana Sakti (SGS) won three zila parishad constituencies (ZPC) out of 17 in the district and has ascertained the constitution of the Lakhimpur Zila Parishad for the next five years by taking lead in the remaining seats till the time of filing of this report.

BJP candidate Kabita Roy Saikia won the No. 11/11 Lakhimpur ZPC seat defeating her nearest Congress candidate Rekhamoni Das by a margin of 197 votes. She secured 7,253 votes while her opponent got 7,056. On the other hand, BJP candidate Rupa Neog won in the No. 11/3 Kherajkhat ZPC seat by defeating Congress candidate Mitali Hazarika.

However, the Congress also did well on the second day by capturing two seats of Lakhimpur Zila Parishad. Congress candidate Chandra Chutia emerged victorious by defeating AGP candidate Padmeswar Chutia to win 11/12 Ujjalpur ZPC seat. The No. 11/10 Sumdiri ZPC also went to the Congress and its candidate Surya Prashad Baruah defeated BJP candidate Jyoti Prashad Borgohain by a huge margin. On the other hand, BJP candidate Manju Borgohain won the No. 11/15 Ghilamora ZPC seat which falls under the jurisdiction of Dhajuakhona subdivision. AGP candidate Tutumoni Gohain Chetia kept the existence of his party alive in the district by winning the No. 11/17 Harhy ZPC seat of the subdivision. The No 11/16 Dhakuakhona ZPC seat also went to the ruling party.

Out of 60 anchalik panchayat member seats in North Lakhimpur subdivision, results of 24 anchalik panchayat member seats were declared and the BJP won 17 seats while Congress won seven, AGP one, independent one and SGS one. Out of 60 gaon panchayats, BJP won in 14, Congress 10, AGP one and SGS one. The result of the 21 GPs under Dhakuakhona subdivision have been declared. In the subdivision, BJP won in 11 GPs while SGS established its power in 5 GPs, AGP in two and Congress in three.
