BJP eyeing major inroads in Northeast

Guwahati, June 11: During its tiol executive meeting on Sunday, the BJP, fresh from its maiden assembly election victory in the Northeast, will hold separate deliberations on the political situation in the eight NE states.

The saffron party, sources said, has already put in place an action-plan to make further inroads into the region.

"In the 2019 general elections, the party is aiming at bagging 20 plus seats from the region," said a senior leader who did not wish to be med.

The BJP leadership, he said, is going by a vaastu concept that if "it can do well in the Northeast, it will automatically fare well in the rest of the country."

The party is closely observing political developments in the states of Manipur and Meghalaya, besides Aruchal Pradesh.

"Though we do not intend to topple any government, we are open on supporting any non-Congress alliance. If the Congress rebels in Manipur or for that matter in Meghalaya want to join the BJP, we welcome them. The Congress government in Meghalaya is also facing dissidence. We may back a non-Congress alliance in that State," said the party source.

Tomorrow's tiol executive will also take a decision on the joining of Aruchal Pradesh Chief Minister Kalikho Pul in the party. Pul and his loyalists had merged with the PPA after defecting from the Congress recently.

Earlier, the BJP had floated a new platform - the North-East Democratic Alliance - soon after its victory in Assam. Himanta Biswa Sarma, a former Congressman who is seen as number two in the new BJP government in Assam, was made the convenor of the platform.

The sources said from now on all Central government announcements will be made through the NEDA platform, which will soon have its headquarter office in Guwahati.
