BJP Gaon Panchayat President Candidate Arrested in Mangaldai

MANGALDAI: In what can be termed as a mockery of the much-talked about campaign for corruption-free Panchayati Raj if the BJP is voted to power in the grassroots level, police on Saturday caught red-handed a BJP candidate for the gaon panchayat president looting several bags of rice from a truck that had met with an accident on Friday night.

The arrested has been identified as Bhupen Deka (55), son of Chiran Deka of village Kuyapani near Aulachowka under Mangaldai Police Station. He is the BJP candidate for the post of president of Aulachowka gaon panchayat, election to which was held on December 5.

A truck bearing registration number AS 01 DD 7159 laden with rice from Guwahati had a head-on collision with another truck bearing registration number NL 01Q 4803 coming from the opposite direction on NH-15 at Bunglagarh near Aulachowka on Friday night and fell on the roadside field. A section of the local people, including the arrested BJP candidate Bhupen Deka, looted away several bags of rice from the ill-fated truck.

Mangaldai Police, on the basis of the FIR lodged by the owner of truck, Shiva Chandra Roy and the owner of the rice bags, Ajay Brahma, registered a case (Mangaldai PS case number 1096/18 under section 379 of Indian Penal Code) and during the prompt course of investigation, recovered seven bags of stolen rice from the traditional godown of Bhupen Deka at his residence and arrested him in this connection. On being produced before the judicial court, the arrested BJP activist was remanded to judicial custody in Mangaldai District Jail.
