GUWAHATI, Feb 19: Taking the bull by the horns, the BJP Assam Pradesh has said that former State Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi admitted his failure as a chief minister in his tirade against the BJP.

In a statement issued to the media today, BJP spokespersons Subhas Dutta and Dilip Saikia said: “Gogoi says that modernization of the police has been a non-happening in Assam. We want to ask Gogoi as to why the police force of the State couldn’t be modernized in his long 15-year rule in the State? This is despite the fact that crores of rupees were spent in the me of modernization of police and Gogoi himself holding the Home portfolio. He should be accountable for the corruption that took place at that time in the me of modernization of police in the State.”

The two spokespersons said: “Gogoi refrained from going into any inquiry into the alleged scam during Rudramoni Dubey’s tenure in connection with the revival of the Kolong Project only to save the then minister Rakibul Hussain’s skin. Corruption in the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) was rampant since the tenure of Gogoi, and he had been well aware of that.”

On the infamous PDS scam in the State, the BJP said: “There had been a big racket smuggling PDS wheat involving huge amount of commission. Gogoi was well aware of all those but pretended to be ignorant of that.”

On Gogoi’s allegation that a few syndicates are still now active in the State, the BJP said: “This is a statement with an ulterior motive. In fact, he has made people to remember the fact that syndicates were rampant in the State during the Congress rule. The reality is such that the tough stand taken by Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal to ensure a clean administration has blocked the sources of income of a large number of Congress leaders in the State, leading to such a ruckus. This has made Gogoi to start a tirade against the BJP-led Government in the State.”

They said that Gogoi need not teach the BJP any lesson on steps to be taken against insurgency. “He, however, shouldn’t forget his dignity by encouraging rebels while criticizing the government,” they said.
