BJP rubbishes allegations made by Congress

GUWAHATI: Congress party and Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia recently made a serious allegation that the Assam Government led by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is steeped in corruption and is engaged in promoting syndicate raj in the State.

Rubbishing the allegations made by the Congress, State BJP spokesperson Rupam Goswami today said that the allegations were baseless and politically motivated

Goswami said that Chief Minister Sonowal launched a drive against corruption immediately after he took over charge and this has made the Congress jittery and nervous.

He further said that during its 15-year rule in the State, the Congress indulged in massive corruption and was steeped in corruption to the neck.

On the other hand, he said that the Sonowal-led Government not only adopted zero tolerance towards corruption in the last two-and- half-a- years but also brought to book as many as 87 officials, including those involved in the cash-for-job APSC scam.

Criticizing the 15-year rule of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Goswami said that other than promotion of corruption, Gogoi did not carry out any developmental work in the State. The result is that the people of the State threw him out of power in the last Assembly election, he added.

He further said that as per the promise made prior to the polls, the BJP-led Government in Assam took to the eviction of encroachers from Xatra and forest land in the State. Goswami also said that at the initiative of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal infrastructure development is taking place at a rapid pace while the law and order situation in the State has vastly improved. Further, at the initiative of the Chief Minister, fast-track courts have been set up to deal with molestation and other cases pertaining to crime against women, he added.

Goswami also said that the Chief Minister is uniting various tribes and communities of the State and is working for the overall development of the State.
