BJP vows to win 12 Lok Sabha seats in Assam: CM Sonowal

Dibrugarh: With the aim of galvanising its support base for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday organised a mass rally at the Chowkidinghee playground here on Thursday which was addressed by chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, BJP's Assam-in-charge Mahendra Singh and state finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Thousands of saffron party workers from Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur and Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency seats participated in the rally.

Addressing party workers, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal vowed to win 12 Lok Sabha seats from the state in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. In the 2014 parliamentary elections, the saffron party had won 7 seats out of the 14 Lok Sabha seats followed by the Congress and AIUDF with 3 seats each while one seat went to an Independent candidate. Urging every worker of the party to keep close contact with the voters of the respective area, Sonowal said that the party was committed to better its 2014 performance in the state.

"We are going to win minimum 12 seats in the state in the 2019 general elections. People will vote for BJP for good governance. We will win with a thumping majority and form the government at the Centre for a second term under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Our party believe in the mantra of collective efforts and inclusive growth (Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas) for the progress of the country. We have to move forward together to fulfil our dream of a strong and resurgent India," Sonowal said.

The chief minister further said that in the last 2 years and ten months since coming to power in the state in 2016, the government has worked for the development of every section of the society.

"After coming to power, we gave land pattas to landless people and small tea growers of the state which the Congress could not do in 70 years. On a single day, we gave land pattas to 11,700 landless people in Brahmaputra and Barak valley. Another 1 lakh people will be provided land pattas within this year. Similarly 1 lakh 30 thousand small tea growers will be provided with land pattas. Moreover, we made the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) corruption-free and transparent. Earlier the Congress government were involved in corruption in the APSC exams. During our tenure, we have given appointment to 55,000 people in a completely transparent process. We have delivered in our commitment in making our state corruption-free and economically strong," Sonowal added.

He also paid tributes to the martyred CRPF jawans of the Pulwama terror attack.

BJP's Assam-in-charge Mahendra Singh in his speech that it was imperative for the people to vote the BJP back to power as it was the only party which can ensure the country's security.

"Only the BJP is capable of safeguarding the interests of the country. In Assam, we have seen that already 14 districts have become minority dominated due to the influx of illegal Bangladeshi migrants. We won't allow Assam to become second Kashmir. It is our commitment. As long as BJP is in power, the land and identity of the Assamese people is safe," Singh said.

State finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in his speech thanked PM Modi for transforming the socio-economic status of the Northeast region and improving the much-needed infrastructure.

"During the last four and half years, the entire Northeast region has moved from the periphery to the core of national development agenda. Under the Act East policy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has raised new hopes among the people of the region who have otherwise always suffered due to neglect by successive governments in the Centre," he said.
