A REPORTER

SHILLONG, Jan 29: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) today staged at Black Flag protest by pinning black flags at its premises to reiterate its opposition to the order passed by the Meghalaya High Court which directed the state government to frame uniform laws on the functioning of traditiol headmen. Speaking on the occasion KHADC CEM PN Syiem said, “The reason for us to stage this black flag day today is to show that we are aggrieved that the High Court has directed the State Government to give its recommendations to empower the traditiol institutions which is a subject matter of the District Council.”

He said that such a move will bring about a conflict between the State government and the District Council which falls under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Condemning the State Cabinet’s decision to amend the Meghalaya Services (Conduct) Rules, “The state cabinet should not have taken the decision in such a hurried manner especially when you look at many localities and communities they are gaining a lot with the presence of government employees in traditiol institutions.”

He asserted that there are intellectuals and educated persons who will contribute much to the welfare of the community as office bearers of various organizations.
