Brown sugar worth Rs 8 lakh seized, three arrested in Tinsukia

DIGBOI/Tinsukia: In a major breakthrough, Makum Police in Tinsukia district, in association with 68 Bn of CRPF, seized around 900 grams of brown sugar, besides arresting three peddlers, including a dealer, on Wednesday evening near Tunsukia bypass under Makum Police Station. Based on a tip off, the joint forces intercepted an Alto car on NH-38 Digboi -Makum road heading towards Makum and recovered the contraband material from the possession of the accused persons, identified Lakhi Neog of Bordumsa Miholi Ritu village, Tomba Ali of Miao in Arunachal Pradesh and a female accomplice Dipti Bora of Bordumsa town. The market value of the seized drug has been estimated at around Rs 8 lakh.

The sources informed that the objectionable consignment was being brought to be sold to a regular customer. Police sources added that a large quantity of suspected drug consignment from Dibrugarh had entered the area couple of days back for delivery in border areas covering Digboi, Bordumsa, Jagun, Kharsang and Miao.

Meanwhile, Tinsukia Superintendent of Police Mugdhajyoti Dev Mahanta, while lauding the efforts of team Makum Police, said that the menace of drugs could be effectively contained only if people extend support to security forces and other agencies engaged in anti-drug crusade. According to Bhaskar Saikia, the OC of Makum Police Station, a case has been registered (247/18) u/s 21(c) of the NDPS Act. Investigation is on.
