BSF seizes cattle on international border of Meghalaya

SHILLONG, Aug 16: Frequent seizures by the alert BSF troops indicate, smuggling of cattle has shown a phenomenal increase this year along the international border of Meghalaya. According to the BSF( Frontier ) Spokesman U.K Nayal, On 15th Aug’2018, the cautious BSF troops deployed at Tuka in East Khasi Hills Distt of Meghalaya noticed suspected movement near International Border. The BSF troops recovered 28 cattle worth approximately more than Rs.5.8 lakhs. These cattle were meant to be smuggled from India to Bangladesh.

Similarly, on August 15 in another incident the BSF troops deployed at Muktapur, West Jaintia Hills, Lyngkhat, East Khasi Hills and Patharghat, East Khasi Hills District seized 41 cattle worth approximately more than Rs. 7.2 lakhs while being smuggled from India to Bangladesh. The 444 kms Indo-Bangladesh border with Meghalaya State interspersed with riverine, dense forests and hilly terrains which provide favourable conditions for cattle smuggling and other crimes. The increasing demand in Bangladesh before forthcoming ‘Eid-ul-Azha’ and high profit involved lures smugglers to indulge in cattle smuggling despite of heavy vigil by the BSF troops. Inclement weather also plays supportive role for these criminals. The alert BSF troops are heavily engaged in curbing this menace which has suddenly increased in Meghalaya since last few months.

The BSF has seized 344 number of cattle and contraband items worth more than Rs. 73 Lacs, while being smuggled out from India to Bangladesh on the International Border along Meghalaya since last four days from the areas of Tuka, Nayabazar, Lyngkhat, Umsiyam, Ryngkua, O P Shella, Patharghat Distt East Khasi Hills and Muktapur, West Jaintia Hills.
