Silchar: Cachar administration has chalked out detailed programme to celebrate the 72nd Independence Day with a difference. Apart from the usual heralding of the historic day with blaring of patriotic songs through public address system and hoisting of the national flag and paying of floral tributes to the innumerable known and unknown freedom fighters, particular stress has been laid on giving some thoughts to the patients of Indian Red Cross Society, Satindra Mohan Dev Civil Hospital, Shiva Sundari Nari Sikshaasram, Cachar Cancer Hospital, Lions’ Eye Hospital, Silchar Medical College and Hospital by distributing fruits under the aegis of some social and philanthropical organizations.

The humanitarian hands as a part of the day long programme will also reach out to the inmates of Nirmal Hriday, prisoners of central jail, Meherpur destitute home, Sudhir Chandra Chakraborty Memorial Blind Academy, Udichi and Nivedita Children Home with packets of sweetmeats, also with the aid and assistance of various business and commerce as well as State government establishments. It will be the most befitting occasion to recall the supreme sacrifices of great freedom fighters and the chief guest on the occasion after unfurling the Tricolour will pay salute to them.

The programme also includes academic exercises and inspirational incentives as the district level discussion on science related subjects will see the participation of students at Ramanuj Gupta Memorial Junior College and awarding of meritorious students for their brilliant academic performances and results. Along with that, distinguished personalities will be felicitated for their remarkable contributions in various fields of life. To make the celebration memorable, games and sports will add a grace to the occasion. Besides boat-race on river Barak, an exhibition football match between district bar association and district sports association has also been listed in which senior members will take part.

It is with the sole objective of infusing the highest sense of patriotism and nationalist feelings that the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and the martyrs’ column would be offered floral tributes. After sunset, the marble statues of great sons of India across the town and beyond along with the State government offices will be illuminated. Quite significantly, various state and private organizations have come forward to make the event successful and also memorable. These include LIC, SBI, Assam Sarba Siksha Abhiyan, Silchar municipal board and development authority, BSNL, IOC among others. Just on the eve of Independence Day, wayside vendors have set up stalls to sell national flags of different sizes.
