Call for ordinance on inclusion of six communities in ST list politically motivated

Kokrajhar: Bodoland Janajati Suraksha Mancha (BJSM) on Thursday reiterated that the President’s ordinance for inclusion of six advanced communities of Assam in ST list as demanded by BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary was politically motivated.

In a statement, BJSM president Janaklal Basumatary said that before demanding ST status for the six communities, Mohilary should spell out how he wanted to safeguard the interest of existing STs, without this he could not sell out the constitutional rights to non-existent community or community of other States in violation of Article 342(1) (2) of the Constitution.

“The State Government cannot recommend the constitutional ST benefit to non-existent community or community of other States. Koch and Rajbongshi are decidedly separate castes shown in SC list of West Bengal, original OBC list in Assam and ST and general list in Meghalaya. In Assam, Rajbongshis or Khatriya Rajbongshis started writing Koch Rajbongshi to claim ST status from 1980s only.

This was a deliberate and fraudulent claim, just to get benefit of ST status, despite having 27 per cent OBC Constitution benefit. This Koch Rajbongshi community is OBC Rajbongshi, not Koch. Thus conclusively there is no Koch Rajbongshi community. No ST status cannot be granted to non-existent communities,” he added.

Basumatary said there were 36 communities included in the tea tribe community which were not communities of Assam but all communities of other States of India. “The State Government cannot recommend constitutional benefit to the community of other States under Article 342(1/(2) of the Constitution,” he added.
