Call for protection of women and children

Shillong, April 17: The growing crime against women and children in the state brought about government institutions, police and NGOs together on Tuesday in Shillong. They was in unanimity that such crimes were rising in the state. Chairperson of the Meghalya State Women Commission, Theilin Phanbuh said, “The women and children are now unsafe.” Virtually asking the police to be more proactive in dealing with such cases, the chairperson of the women commission asked the cops to set up to be more pro-active cells in dealing with such issues. On the other hand, chairperson of the State Commission of Child Protection Meena Kharkongor lamented on the drawbacks of the judiciary. “We have taken up the cases and it is disturbing that the accused are getting bail” she said while adding, “We acted within our limits and these dampen our spirit to work for a woman or girl child due to poor prosecution.”.

The Meghalya Deputy Inspector Genral (DIG)  Mukesh Kumar Singh spoke about the lacuna related to forensic lab. However, he was firm that the alledged perpetrators will be brought into book on any issues related to cime against women.
