Capitalist Forces And Religious Zealots Biggest Threat to Indian Nationalism

Dibrugarh: A discussion on the subject 'Indian Nationalism and its Recent Challenges' was organized by Dibrugarh Centre for Islamic Studies (DCIS) on Sunday at the Eidgah Maidan's auditorium. The discussion was moderated by former Principal of Assam Medical College and Hospitals, Dr. Taufiqur Rahman Borbora.

The chief speaker for the event was political analyst and Professor of Political Science, Gauhati University, Dr Akhilranjan Dutta. In his speech, Dr Dutta traced the genesis of Indian nationalism to the country's response to the oppressive rule of the Britishers. He said that the Indians, in order to throw off the yoke of tyranny and exploitation, had put aside their regional and other differences to give a united fight. Dr Dutta also mentioned how some capitalist forces had always tried to enrich themselves at the expense of the lower strata of the society. Such capitalist forces, he said, were present even today, and together with the religious zealots, were the biggest threat to Indian nationalism in the present times. However, he was hopeful that Indian nationalism would stay afloat as long as sensible forces, driven by humanism, continued to exist.

Earlier, one of the founders of DCIS, Dr. Masud-ul-Haque started the discussion by drawing a parallel between India's nationalism and that of the foreign countries. Associate Professor of Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dr. Sajid Ahmed, speaking on 'Islam and World Peace', opined that if all the people followed their respective religious tenets in the purest sense, there would be no room for any religious disharmony in the world.

The event also bore witness to the launch of a magazine titled Anubhuti by former Professor of Sanskrit Department of DHSK College, Dr. Maheshwar Hazarika. Dedicated to one of the most prolific Assamese novelists of all time, Dr. Syed Abdul Malik, the magazine was edited by Gaurika Baruah Ahmed.

Dignitaries, including Dr Bharati Dutta, Dr GMS Chowdhury, Dr Prabin Gogoi and Ikbal Ahmed, asked questions to Dr Dutta in response to his speech. Among the other prominent citizens present on the occasion included Dr. Munin Sharma, Dr. Kaminiranjan Baruah, advocate Saifur Rahman and Hasan Sharif Ahmed.
