Cash amounting to Rs. 14lakhs seized from a hotel room in Nagaon

Guwahati: An amount of Rs. 14lakh was seized from a hotel room in Nagaon after a joint raid by Nagaon police, Income Tax cell and flying squad officials.

The cash has been seized from a hotel room in Nagaon, Hoiborgaon area ahead of the second phase of Lok Sabha polls.

Authorities have arrested three persons in connection with the case and the arrested persons are Sakil Akhtar, Jiten Goswami and Arindam Kakoty. But later the trio have been bailed out.

The joint operation has been carried out on Monday night after which the cash of Rs. 14.93lakh has been seized from the hotel room.

According to sources, it has been revealed from a preliminary investigation that the hotel room was booked by a senior Congress leader and the persons who have been arrested were allegedly close aides of the Congress leaders in Nagaon.

The source further informed that the cash was found inside the envelopes carrying the symbol of Congress and the envelopes were stuffed with cash amounting to Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 10,000.

Commenting on the incident, Congress candidate Pradyut Bordoloi said that the cash was meant for the polling agents and that the money is valid and all the documentation has been completed. Bordoloi also said that it is a conspiracy to defame the Congress.

In a separate operation, an amount of Rs. 12 lakh has been seized from Hojai and Athgaon in Guwahati. Police nabbed two persons involved in the case.
