Central Government Hardly Cares About Engaging the North-eastern Youth in the Situations Vacant!

How much care and concern the Central Government has for the young people in the North-eastern region can now be gauged from a piece of information that has emanated from the University Grants Commission (UGC), the authority that controls and regulates higher education in the entire country. According to a news item published on the front page of this newspaper on Monday, as many as 231 out of 421 sanctioned posts of Professors are currently lying vacant in nine central universities spread across the North-east. This comes to nearly 55 per cent of sanctioned posts lying vacant. Looking individually at these nine central universities, one finds that the status is the worst in Tripura University, where close to 85 per cent of the sanctioned posts have not been filled up. The situation of vacancies in the remaining eight central universities are as follows : Nagaland University 73.3 per cent (33 out of 45 positions vacant), Sikkim University 65 per cent (19 out of 29), Manipur University 61.5 per cent (24 out of 39), Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar, 59.25 per cent (16 out of 27), Mizoram University 53 (25 out of 47), Assam University 48.8 (22 out of 45), North-Eastern Hill University 48.38 (45 out of 93) and Tezpur University 16 per cent (8 out of 50). These statistics also definitely reveal that students who have enrolled in these central universities after great difficulty and spending a lot of hard-earned money of their parents are not getting proper care, and they must definitely be lagging behind in terms of completion of the syllabus. The question is: are the Members of Parliament from the North-eastern region concerned about this state of affairs in the central universities? How many of them have read the news-item that highlighted this aspect last Monday? How many of them are going to write to the Union HRD Minister – and maybe the Prime Minister himself – to get these vacancies filled up at the earliest? Going back, how many of the MPs from the region – they also include former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh – have during their tenure in Parliament so far raised questions regarding the functioning of central universities in the North-east? How many are aware that the Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University has been placed under suspension?
