Centre Sanctions 174 Additional MBBS Seats

GUWAHATI: In a development that will help poor meritorious students to realize their dreams of becoming doctors, the Centre has sanctioned 174 additional MBBS seats under Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota for six medical colleges in Assam. The Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare on Friday issued a notification accepting the proposal of Medical Council of India (MCI) and directed the Assam Government to fill up the MBBS seats under EWS quota as per rules in the academic year 2019-20. The development has led to increase of seats in six medical colleges to 900.

An elated Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “Happy to share~Medical Council of India has sanctioned 174 additional #MBBS seats under Economically Weaker Section quota for 6 medical colleges of Assam, taking total available seats to 900. Will address aspirations of many who wish to pursue medicine. Grateful@drharshvardhan.”

As per the Union Ministry’s notification 44 seats have been increased in Gauhati Medical College, taking the total number of seats to 200, 30 in Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh, taking the total number of seats to 200; 25 in Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College, Barpeta, taking the total number of seats to 125.

A total of 25 seats have been increased in Jorhat Medical College & Hospital, taking the total number of seats to 125; 25 in Silchar Medical College, taking the total number of seats to 125 and 25 in Tezpur Medical College & Hospital, taking the total number of seats to 125.

“Many poor students harbour dreams of becoming doctors since their childhood. Reserving 174 seats for such students will fulfil many such dreams,” a former principal of GMCH said.
