Chant Slogans Afresh to Cancel Bill: Martyr-Victim Families

GUWAHATI: The All Assam Martyrs-Victims Family Council (AAMVFC) has appealed to the student-turned politicians of the State to chant slogans like – Aah, oi aah, olai aah/Khed oi khed, bideshi khed – afresh in the wake of the move to introduce the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

Talking to the media in Guwahati on Monday, AAMVFC chief secretary Manik Chandra Debnath said: “Assam is Assam even today only because of the Assam Agitation, and because of the sacrifices made by the martyrs. The Assam agitation was meant for freeing the State from foreigners. However, today the Assam Accord is a political issue – which is why various clauses of the Accord are far from being implemented. We demand implementation of each and every clause of the Accord.”

Debnath said: “Assam has no place for foreigners – be them Hindus or Muslims. Under no circumstances we’re ready to accept the introduction of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. It has to be cancelled. If the Bill is passed, martyrs-victims’ families won’t hesitate to sacrifice their lives.”

The Council has made it clear that if their demands are not met the martyr-victims’ families will resort to go for a vigorous agitation, and may even go to the extent of boycotting the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Meanwhile, the AASU observed the martyrs’ day all over the State. In Guwahati at Nehru Park under the aegis of the All Guwahati Students’ Union (AGSU) the day was observed.

Paying tribute to martyrs at the programme, AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath said: “The problem of foreigners in Assam is more devastating in the State than what it was at the time of the Assam Agitation.”

AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said: “A time-bound programme for implementation of each and every clause of the Assam Accord is a must, besides total sealing of the international border.”

AASU adviser in chief Samujjal Bhattacharjya said: “Dispur is observing martyrs’ day. It’s nice. True tribute to the martyrs will be giving a clear-cut picture as to when the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and other Orders, Rules of its ilk will be cancelled.”
