GUWAHATI: The CJM Court, Kamrup on Thursday remanded Sub Inspector of Dispur Police Station Nipu Kalita to seven days police custody. Absconding home guard Afjal Ali, on the otehr hand, surrenderred before Dispur police tonight. Sub Inspector Nipu Kalita, the prime accused in snatching 60 gold bars from smugglers at Nongpoh on January 15, surrendered before the Basistha Police on Wednesday. He was produced before the CJM Court on Thursday. After the January 15 incident came to light, SI Kalita and home guard Afjal Ali had been absconding. Interestingly enough, Havildar Faizur Rahma was on duty in Dispur police station till February 10. He, however, did the vanishing act after being interrogated by higher-ups. Rahman is still absconding. On January 15, SI Kalita had gone with a Papa car of Dispur Police Station to Jorabat from where he sent the car back to the police station. He, along with the other two, went to Nongpoh in a city vehicle.

According to the police, two smugglers – Wahidur Rahman and Wahajuddin now in police remand – were employed for ferrying consignments. They get around Rs 14,000 after successfully dispatching a consignment to its destination.

Kalita is now being interrogated by top City Police officials separately. Sources said even though Kalita has confessed his guilt, his contradictory statements on the incidents have bewildered the investigators.
