Chief Minister’s ‘repeal’ statement condemned

Itanagar, June 30: Reacting to Chief Minister Pema Khandu's assurance to repeal "Freedom of Religion Act", the Indigenous Faith & Cultural Society of Arunachal Pradesh (IFCSAP) has condemned the "move" in strongest of terms and termed it "insensible, loaded with minority appeasement motive and detrimental to the growth of indigenous people and their culture".

Emphasizing that 'loss of culture is loss of identity', the IFCSAP said that the "move" would lead to reported degradation of indigenous culture of the State.

The IFCSAP appealed the Chief Minister to withdraw his statement and not to initiate the "repeal" process in the Assembly session. In the event of the CM not withdrawing his press statement, the IFCSAP said it would mobilize statewide movement.

Further, it said: "The people of Arunachal Pradesh would fight tooth and nail to keep the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 1978 alive."

Responding to the statement made by the Chief Minister, the Nyishi Indigenous Faith and Cultural Society (NIFCS) said: "Such statement will extensively damage the very basic structure of indigenous faith and culture of the state which is still languishing under the persistent and aggressive influence of the foreign culture."

NIFCS added saying "such callous and irresponsible statement from Chief Minister is uncalled for and by doing so the Chief Minister is undermining the sentiment and emotions of the indigenous faith believers of the state."

While flaying the CM's statement, the NIFCS requested to withdraw the same and demanded to notify the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 1978 and implement it in letter and spirit to check the alleged rampant conversion of innocent people of the state.

While hailing the "step", the Arunachal Pradesh Catholic Association (APCA), on behalf of Catholic community of the State, has heartily welcomed the "decisive announcement" made by the Chief Minister to repeal the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Faith Act, 1978.
